New Zebra at Los Angeles Zoo
A Stripey Success: Los Angeles Zoo Welcomes New Zebra Foal
The Los Angeles Zoo has a little more "pizazz" in its pastures this week. Officials are thrilled to announce the birth of a healthy Grevy’s zebra foal, born in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
The newcomer, whose gender has yet to be determined, was up and walking within an hour of birth—a vital instinct for zebras in the wild. This marks a significant milestone for the zoo’s conservation efforts, as Grevy’s zebras are currently classified as an endangered species.
First Steps and Family Ties
The foal was born to veteran mother, Malia, and father, Kito. Zookeepers report that the pair are bonding beautifully. While the foal is still finding its footing, it has already been seen "zooming" around the habitat, much to the delight of the animal care staff.
"Every birth of a Grevy’s zebra is a win for the species," says Lead Keeper Sarah Jenkins. "Their patterns are as unique as a human fingerprint, and seeing those fresh stripes for the first time never gets old."
